The second year of Harnessing the Extractive industries for Development will be held in Egham, England. Funded by ESRC, this one day interdisciplinary workshop will create space for PhD researchers, academics and practitioners to discuss the potential role of extractive industries in sub-Saharan African development.

MSV Managing Director Jeff Geipel will be a panelist in the evening, championing local content measures including through the use of the Local Procurement Reporting Mechanism (LPRM)

IGF Annual General Meeting 2017

The 2017 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) will convene from 17-19 October, with workshops taking place on 16 and 20 October.

Mining Shared Value will be presenting on how the Mining Local Procurement Reporting Mechanism (LPRM), launched in July 2017, can be used to help mining companies and governments boost transparency and build more inclusive supply chains through better local procurement reporting.

The Mining Shared Value team will be at the big Investing in African Mining Indaba in Cape Town promoting local procurement by the global mining industry as a means to improve the development impacts of mineral extraction for host countries. Specifically MSV will launch its report on local content regulations in South Africa and Namibia in partnership with the Canadian International Resources and Development Institute (CIRDI), and promote the Mining Local Procurement Reporting Initiative being finalized this spring. Anthea Darychuk from Mining Shared Value along with Dr. Karen Travers from the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business will be presenting our collaborative research project on the role of Aboriginal businesses in the Canadian mining industry. Our presentation is titled "Understanding Canada's Aboriginal Business Landscape" and will focus on the current state of Aboriginal business involvement in one of Canada's most important industries.

Our research highlights the best practices for how both Aboriginal suppliers and mining procurement staff are building partnerships and developing stronger relationships between industry and the Aboriginal business community.

This national study has identified the central business case for increasing procurement from Aboriginal suppliers, and we will be speaking about our findings on Wednesday's panel at 3:30.

Investing in African Mining Indaba, held in Cape Town, South Africa, is an annual professional conference dedicated to the capitalization and development of mining interests in Africa. It is currently the world's largest mining investment event and Africa's largest mining event. 

Mining Shared Value will be presenting about our new initiative in partnership with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH to develop a reporting standard for local procurement in mining, as well as results from other projects including our work with the Canadian International Resources and Development Institute (CIRDI) on how comprehensive local procurement regulatory frameworks can motivate mining companies to increase their local purchasing.

SMI Seminar, University of Queensland

Venture leader Jeff Geipel presented a Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) seminar, at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. The event was organized by the Centre for Social Responsibility In Mining (CSRM), one of the seven centres that make up the SMI. 

The seminar examined the role that local purchases of goods and services by mining companies can have in creating economic and social development in host countries. It also examined the local procurement business case for mining companies, by showing how local procurement helps companies to obtain a social license to operate.
